Australia Post developed its first environmental policy in 1992, introducing a number of programs designed to reduce Post’s environmental impact. A more cohesive and extensive Environment Management System (EMS) was implemented in 1997.
|
|
EMS kits containing guidelines for environmental management and a questionnaire seeking to identify major environmental risks were sent to every facility. A personal guide to responsible environmental practices was issued to each employee.
|
Copies of the EMS kit also went to all licensed post offices to encourage them to implement responsible environmental practices in their business operations. (Licensees are legally responsible for their own environmental conduct.)
Responses to the questionnaire were analysed and actions taken to resolve each of the major environmental risks identified e.g. fuel storage tanks, refuelling facilities, the use of incinerators, etc.
A range of other initiatives have been implemented to minimise both existing and potential negative environmental impacts.
A legal firm is employed to review and monitor ongoing changes to environmental legislation. Changes are converted into easy-to-follow procedures and made available to all staff through the Intranet.
Regular external audits have also been conducted to verify that Post's EMS continues to meet both legislative requirements and community expectations.
Post is now expanding the EMS to incorporate the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development.
