Environmentally Friendly Products
We have made significant progress in ensuring that our POSTpak range is environmentally friendly. The great majority of products are made from recycled content and are recyclable themselves. The Winepaks have been an exception, however we have subsequently addressed this by introducing a more "environmental friendly" replacement. Prior to this year, Australia Post produced both polystyrene and polypropylene Winepaks. While the polystyrene pak is designed to be reusable and has little to no impact in landfill, the polypropylene pak was a security-designed alternative, which was a single-use pak. We have now developed a cardboard replacement for this pak which, while not having the security features of the polypropylene pak, can be used many times, is made of recycled content and can be recycled at the end of its useful life.
Australia Post was also able to introduce 15% of recycled content into bubble wrap products and the caps used in our mailing tube product (the mailing tube itself is made of 100% recycled fibre). Padded bags now have a minimum 60% recycled fibre content and 20% recycled plastic content in the bubble lining. All POSTpak mailing boxes have 66% recycled fibre content. Most of the POSTpak product range is 100% recyclable at the end of its useful life. About 70% of the weight of POSTpak products sold are reclaimable at the end of its useful life. In general, Australia Post’s mailing products (including POSTpak, Express Post and Parcel Post bags) are made using 30% recyclable content.
